The Way Americans Shop is Changing and Mobile Might be the New Direction

We use our cell phones for everything these days. To check our bank accounts, order food, or stay connected with loved ones; the things you can do on your phone are limitless.

And now according to a survey done by a company called SimpleTexting, Americans are even shopping from their phones. The company says they surveyed 1,000 consumers around the U.S. to gauge:

  • How many mobile purchases did consumers make in the past year? From social media apps? On Amazon?
  • Which product categories are consumers making the most mobile purchases? This included apparel, food, electronics, and more.
  • Which mobile marketing strategies influenced mobile purchases most? Including text offers, influencer marketing, or user-generated content.

Turns out that 97% of respondents have made at least one purchase from their mobile device in the past year and 54% have made anywhere from 1-10 purchases in the past year. This isn’t too surprising given that you can easily shop from apps in 2021.

Shopping on your phone can make impulse shopping easier. It’s so easy to select “Apple Pay” and with one click, your new shirt or Doordash meal is on its way. 83% of Gen-Z respondents say that they make purchases more impulsively on mobile than on a desktop. In total, 43% of consumers are willing to spend $100 or more on a single purchase from their mobile device.

So where are all these purchases happening? Nearly 5 out of 10 people make 30% or more of their purchases on Amazon. Almost 70% of consumers made at least one purchase directly from a social media app like Facebook or Instagram within the past year.

The survey also asked which social media channel is the go-to for discovering and purchasing new products from a mobile device, and the majority of consumers (63%) say Facebook, followed by Instagram (58%), and Youtube (51%).

The results seem to show that American consumers like the accessibility of mobile shopping. Could going into the mall be a thing of the past? Only time will tell.
